Data detectives – identifying data lean applications/services and methods of self defence
Robert Altschaffel and Stefan Kiltz (University of Magdeburg, Germany) – Virtual presentation
In this workshop we will motivate the need of a data-lean environment in the context of threats to IT security and privacy. Starting with ethics and a problem discussion we show a data centric process based on principles used in IT forensics to ensure a scientific approach towards the topics. Then we will introduce the concept of data detectives as a mindset for the users. The attendees are then equipped with methods to search and identify privacy violations when using websites and mobile applications. We start with a beginner’s level for both websites and mobile applications but also provide tools and methods for advanced users. Finally, we look at means to block privacy violations when using websites and mobile applications. To achieve this, the findings made by the users in their role as data detectives is used to alter settings/configurations of tools to greatly enhance privacy. We, again, provide a set of beginner’s level means and also progress towards tools and methods for advanced users.
